Root Cause Mechanic — Terms of Service

Safety & informational-use notice — please read. Root Cause Mechanic is a diagnostic helper that organizes your vehicle's data and suggests possible causes. It is informational only and is not a substitute for inspection or repair by a qualified mechanic. Do not rely on it for safety-critical decisions. Do not operate the app or an OBD scan tool while driving. You are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of your vehicle.

1. Beta service

The Service is currently offered as a beta. It is provided for evaluation, may change or be unavailable, and may contain errors. Beta participation includes the collection of anonymous diagnostics described in our Privacy Policy.

2. Eligibility & accounts

You must be at least 18 (or the age of majority where you live) and able to form a binding contract. You are responsible for your account and for keeping your sign-in secure, and for the accuracy of the information you enter (including your VIN and vehicle details).

3. Your responsibilities

• Use the Service only for lawful purposes and your own vehicles (or vehicles you're authorized to service).
• Use a compatible OBD-II adapter appropriately; the app reads vehicle data read-only and does not modify your vehicle, but you are responsible for your adapter and vehicle.
• Do not misuse the Service — no reverse engineering, scraping, overloading, or attempting to access other users' data.

4. Diagnostic results

Diagnoses, cost estimates, maintenance suggestions, and recall information are provided on an best-effort, as-is basis and may be incomplete or incorrect. Always confirm with a qualified professional before performing repairs or making financial decisions. Recall and vehicle data come from third-party/government sources and we do not guarantee its accuracy or completeness.

5. Sharing with repair shops

If you choose to share a vehicle with a shop, you authorize that shop to view the shared vehicle's data and to add repair records while the share is active. You may revoke a share at any time. Shops using the Service agree to access only vehicles shared with them and to use the data solely to service that vehicle.

6. Payments (when applicable)

Paid plans, when offered, are billed through the Apple App Store under its terms; subscriptions renew until cancelled in your App Store settings. Beta access is currently free. Any referral credits are promotional, have no cash value, and may be modified or discontinued.

7. Intellectual property

The Service, its content, and branding are owned by Root Cause Mechanic. Your data remains yours; you grant us the limited license needed to operate the Service for you (e.g. to store it and generate your diagnoses).

8. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND ACCURACY OF DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Root Cause Mechanic is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for vehicle damage, repair costs, or losses arising from your reliance on the Service. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

10. Changes & termination

We may update these Terms (we'll update the effective date and, for material changes, notify you) and may suspend or end the Service or your access for violations. You may stop using the Service at any time.
